The Chassis number is the critical one, and if that matches the one that you have on the vehicle then all is well. If the V5 shows the Kyote makes plate number then that is excellent, and I`m presuming its also down as a Kyote too, or some sort of Buggy. As long as this number is indeed pop riveted (and not screwed) somewhere, then all is well.

Engine numbers are always wrong as it takes longer to fill out the forms than undoing the four bolts - however, thats a nice easy one to change (in a months time) and all you do is send back the V5 with the updated engine number and/or engine capacity.

If still unsure, then by all means give me a yell 07801 131144   

It's actually shown as Convertible on the V5, and the plate is riveted. If that's acceptable then I'll leave the details as is.

As you suggest, I'll update the engine number some time in the future. It's already down as a 1600 on the V5.

If thats your chassis number on the V5, and registered as Convertible then I would say Happy Days

Strictly speaking that chassis plate should be on the Chassis, not the Body - but wouldn`t worry to much   

Update the engine number though when you can, as that is certainly something you are legally required to do and there should not be any drama`s or issues in doing that one either

It has a number stamped on the generator flange, starts AD... but I can't make out the rest until I chip some paint off.

Actually meant a new casing, without an identity number . Don't mean to jump on the thread.

VW sold new casings over the counter as a "recognized spare part". These came with no id number. At the time it was a simple job that did not need dvla approval prior to stamping it yourself or by the local garage. You can come across re-built engines with nothing more than a simple stamped plated "pinned" to a casing. I am not aware of anyone having an issue having v5c engine number changed.

DVLA did try and revisit the old chestnut of engine swapping a few years back when they were going through all of the legislation (tidying everything up for leaving the EU) and they did state again that engine swaps needed to have a receipt for the engine and details on headed paper of the garage that carried out the work. They backed down very quickly when we provided written evidence from them that back in 2011 they had already told us that pre-1973 vehicles do not need any of this, and they have since left us alone. You are legally required to notify them of any changes to the engine, and this can be done quite safely and easily

Sure but depending on who opens your envelope they still sometimes need reminding of their own rules. A simple covering letter is recommended and should suffice.

Of course . .

However, I personally would not do that. I would send back the V5 with the relevant changes (one at a time as DVLA cannot multitask) but I would put a quick covering letter kindly reminding them that due to the age of the vehicle, written documentation from a garage is no longer required and you have carried out this conversion yourself.

Save the letter for when you really need it, don`t waste it on a simple and straightforward application 

Also bear in mind that DVLA like exact engine sizes (eg 1584cc) rather than a more generic 1600.
