I've recently changed both front brake drums, nearside perfect, offside is now making a slight knocking noise and gets faster with acceleration.

I know it's definitely not a bearing issue but wondered if anyone else has any ideas or solutions?

Are the wheels nuts tight?

Yes all nuts torqued to 97nm, I thought it may have been the centre bolt being too tight but l loosened that slightly and didn't make any difference.

jack it up and spin the wheel to feel for fouling may be a wheel bolt hitting or is it something stuck in the tyre making the noise.

What Snoopy said. Guess you have wheel bolts, original VW styley. Probably touching a spring.

Jack up spin and make sure you can hear it, slacken bolts it will probably stop. Have you got the springs mounted correctly. Right way round and fully home in the holes

What makes you say it's definitely not a bearing issue? Did you replace the bearings or reuse the old ones?

I wouldn't have thought it was the bolts as I've had them off and on quite regularly and always torque the same.

Only changed the drum and bearings, didn't touch the springs.

It's not the sort of noise for bearings, I intend on jacking it up tomorrow and as mentioned will spin the wheel to see if noise continues.

I read somewhere that the drum could be warped but it didn't mention a knocking noise would be the noise heard if that was the case, then also read that it could be to do with the shoes but again I didn't change them.

Is it Speedo side?  Circlip dropped off and square drive skipping?

No worries, no it's not Speedo side.

Could be the hun end cap has come off the drum if you have wheels with centre caps fitted.

I hadn't put the centre caps on when I tested it.

Is the new drum catching the backplate?
Jack up the wheel, by elimination you should be able to determine the source of the knocking. Back off the brakes, try adjusting the bearings again, even remove the drum.
Just my ideas.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions I'll jack it up tomorrow and see how I get on.

Ok so jacked the buggy up, did a process of elimination... took the drum off and everything was fine but as soon as I put the bolts in that's when the noise started.

Noticed at this point one of the bolts (as I had bought some new ones) and one of them on closer inspection although the same length supposedly turned out it's about a mm too long which is what was causing the knocking.

All good now but thanks once again for all your suggestions and help.

 
Gotta love an easy fix.
