There is a british standard number for seat belts but the mot test does not check legality just mounting points, webbing and catch operation. Checking the BS mark is not n mot item. You can get 4 point ones with release buttons.

What Snoopy says, doesn't need to be a button.

The button thing comes from the ECE approval, ECE Reg. 16 states a belt needs to be released by a 'button or similar device' which must be coloured red. This is one of the many regulations which a manufacturer must pass to sell a new vehicle, and is not an inspection point for vehicles already on the road.

The MOT test looks for the anchorage security, the webbing/stitching condition and the correct operation of the buckle and retractor if fitted.  The release method is not checked.

For IVA, a belt needs a label showing it meets British Standard BS3254 Part 1 1988, or FIA 8853-98 for a harness, and that 'The locking mechanism, i.e. the buckle, when both under load and not under load, can be released by a single movement in one direction by either hand'.   The FIA requirement requires release by either by turning a knob, or pressing a button.  The BSI standard I don't have reference to – does anyone else know the BSI details?
If it ain't broke, fix it 'til it is...

Thats a bit of great information, thanks

My problem is when looking around to buy some, they can range from £20 to £300
So all I need to do is get the FIA or British stardard mark on the belts and we are away

Evenin mate, just a bit of yawn advice for you,,
if a seatbelt harness is £20 its £20 for a reason, dont just buy coz its the cheapest fleabay china, afterall this item may have to save yours or the passengers life one day. do some shoppin around and buy from a reputable company/supplier even if it means spending a little more than you hoped.
bought my seats from these guys they do all types of harnesses aswell, weath of knowledge and really easy to talk to http://www.sportseats4u.co.uk/ not sayin buy from them, they are one of the more pricy outfits out there but i got peace of mind buying from a company like this compared to if id have bought of an auction site

I get you, you get what you pay for.
I just dont want to spend my hard learnt money on the wrong thing and due to this been a new build, it will possibly have to go through a IVA test.
I just want to get the right gear
