Bit of a long shot, I know. I'm after a pair of throttle spindles for twin IDF40's.  Anybody got any, please?

Eurocarb ?

Yeah but they're £36 each! And don't come predrilled for the roll pin.

They may not come pre drilled for a roll pin but does 'anyone' have any idea what it takes to make this stuff ?

This is a carb for heavens sake, not central heating!  :( and £36 is literally giving it away, just buy one and get
the roll pin drilling done afterwards...

Or you could just go to a Taiwanese website every year... And it's 'Job Done' literally...

£36 each  :o  Nah, stuff that  >:(  A pair of those is going to be the wrong side of £100 with vat and delivery, and then you need more machining too

I can see what Peter is saying that a lot of work can go into something of premium build, but I`m not sure you will get that sort of quality from some of the bits that Eurocarb are banging out these days. It was not that long ago I bought a pair of supposedly top quality carbs and linkages form them and just about every bit failed. Rob and Eurocarb asked for more information about what had gone wrong, and the email I sent him shows some of the poor quality parts they were supplying.

I also published that email too, as I wanted to make sure everyone knew how bad their quality control is

http://www.beachbuggy.info/Eurocarb.htm

If the price of that part was cheap, then worth a punt, or if Peter can point you at someone else who has produced a quality part that justifies the price, then its worth considering too.

After reading all about Eurocarb I think maybe they wont be able to help, well, not in the real world anyway.

The real world being somewhere that existed once in the distant past but unfortunately
got removed when everyone was encouraged to think that the price was everything and
that buying total crap and then complaining about it might help. Something that now seems to be a habit!.

Maybe give http://www.webcon.co.uk/ a call, they handle most of the worlds Weber requirements now I think.

Fuel injection has changed the market irreversibly and our carburetors are something of a novelty now meaning that parts supply
can and will, only get worse

Or better but more expensive as it moves over to specialist companies.

The other area that would be worth a call is http://www.redlineweber.com/

If you would like to read the story, some of it is here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weber_carburetor

We have to realise that carbs are going to oneday fade away, parts might be more expensive to
obtain but this stuff isnt easy to make, not everything falls off the shelf and certainly doesnt if its worth having.

Carbs are precision made things, the engineering to make them in vast quantities brings the price
down but as time goes by there will be fewer and fewer places to go.

Weber production went to Spain when they stopped making them in Italy, the two links I have put to suppliers
are Weber outlets.

If you want it all cheap then by all means use other outlets, using 40 IDF's or anything that came from Weber should at least
warrant the effort to get parts replaced without moaning about the cost, no body has moaned but I can hear it coming!

One day I am hoping to get a DCOE mounted and working on my 1600 twin port as  I really like the idea of twin carbs,
but all in just one body and no faffing around syncing it all...

Maybe.... The technology or rather 'tooling and processes' required may be more than single small companies can afford.

It takes a LOT of investment in tooling and associated processes to make these things, and getting a fast return
in the public areas isn't something that will fuel that!...

Mass production and car manufactures are where the real demand came from and this gave Weber the means to develop VERY nice carbs.

They wont be cheap if they are worth having, so that rules out virtually everybody who wants a spare part for almost nothing...

But thats also the problem Peter, you cannot gauge quality on price any more.

from my own experience, rather than picking up a cheap pair of carbs, I went to Eurocarb and bought a pair from them that had supposedly been refurbished. They had several linkages available, so I opted for the top of the range one which was from a recognised brand. Apart from costing me a holiday abroad and a ferry ticket, those two carbs cost me near £1500 with all the bits that went with them.

Turns out that Eurocarb have no facility to bench test carbs and the parts they supply are made from buttermilk, as I`m not even going to give them the dignity of calling them cheese.

People WILL pay, but they will only pay for quality, what we always get offered is cheese, and thats why people baulk about paying for that.

Whatever happened to real metal ?   :-\

Finally managed to sort this one out. All the spindles available to buy were the wrong ones. The only option was to fix the old ones. The threaded ends with flats had been filed and the threads were gone. The genius at the rolling road was able to re- weld some metal on, turn them down, re-tap the M7 thread and file the flats.

Time to rebuild the carbs now :D

Brilliant stuff and nice to hear than people will do things like that for you  ;-)up

QuoteWhatever happened to real metal ?

Believe me 'real metal' is still out there, but I guess it's the parts suppliers sourcing everything from the cheapest outlet they
can find. They probably melt down bedsteads and old steel fencing...

Good material is out there but I think we have made our own problems by wanting absolutely everything 'cheap', what
was once a trend is now completely normal, with the effect that people making the real stuff, have gone out of business...

We are now reaping what we have sown!

Bit of help please! How do I put the 2mm steel roll pin through the pump cam and spindle? I tried tapping it with a small hammer and bent the roll pin. Will pick up some new ones tomorrow but is there a decent way to do it without buying a special tool that I'll never use again?

You need a proper drift
It consists of an outer sleeve thet holds the hard metal drift which is the bit you tap.
The clever bit is hey are in a range of sizes and the pin slides into the bottom of the outer and holds the pin straight while it taps in
Had a quick look online and cant see any but spend a bit of time searching and you will find them

Mine were issued to me in 1972 for repairing old mechanical computers, and still going strong (a bit like me)
