Hi all

Strange I know but when I indicate when driving buggy just completely dies! I know the obvious thing is to go through the wiring but can't understand why it would affect the engine?? Anyone had anything similar??

Sounds like its putting a positive to the coil negative, which is effectively shutting the coil down.

Must be shorting somewhere either in  the front to back loom or near the ignition on the column.

Strange things there,
Do the indicators work ok, on the move and also stationary fault
Do all the lights function correctly when turned on together
Standard beetle indicator and ign switch fitted my favourite would be a short taking the ignition voltage away that is not fused so if left on a fire would start.

Definitely the most likely culprit. Make sure all the wires are clipped properly in their little channel clips. Make sure there is enough slack on the wires to enable this - but not too much! Also I found putting a blob of hot melt glue on the 3 exposed brass terminals can help prevent shorts.

Hot melt glue is not a good idea, as its low melting point can easily melt in the sunshine (at least it would if we ever saw any)  ;)

Dave it's just 3 little blobs. even if it softened in the legendary sunshine  ;) - it's not enough to flow anywhere; it would, if anything, secure it a little better. Mine works fine and has been out in the sun for a day at 30 degrees plus in the sunshine.

I was thinking more along the lines that the glue can soften and then encompass the exposed brass contacts, preventing connectivity and exposing the once protected area as a result. Nightmare to clean off if it happened.

Just sayin  ;)

As Chad said.

1 of the most common faults will be incorrect wiring to the 3 warning lights on the speedo.

Do the indicators still work?

Might be talking about different bits. I'll try and post a pic tomorrow.

All indicators and lights work fine. When vehicle is stationary and you indicate, it dies and when your moving and indicate, it dies. It won't start straight away. Have to leave it only 20secs and it will start again. Then to make it even more strange it sometimes is absolutely fine when you indicate! Weird!

May be a coincidence as you indicate and release the accelerator at the same time. Does it stall if you do not indicate when slowing down to turn.

As OP said above above it happens at idle.
I am not sure of the circuit in the beetle/your buggy, but for example you could bypass the flasher unit and use the indicator and see if it dies that would eliminate/incriminate the flasher unit.

If the wiring goes from the column to each indicator then it is at or before the stalk otherwise it would occur with just one indicator.

Remove power to the indicators by pulling the fuse and see if it happens when you use the stalk - if it does the issue is in the column. it would also tell you if the fuse is actually doing what it what it says or has been messed with.

EDIR - Doh! Wiring diagram right at the top! I'll take a look ....
