Beach Buggy Rolling Chassis Help / Possible bump steer
« on: September 01, 2020, 03:15:52 PM »
Hi all, out for a bank hol blast in the buggy yesterday and had a pretty alarming experience that I have not experienced before and wondered if anyone here has had similar. Was going at about 35mph down hill into mevagissey in cornwall whenn sunddenly the buggy started bouncing up and down, banging and juddering, my first thought was a puncture or worse a wheel bearing broke up. I can describe it also as if the wheels , not sure if front or back were oval instead of round as the whole buggy was violently going up and down what felt like several inches. I pulled over expecting to find something big broken, my wife said it was the white painted sharks teeth on the road and slow sign. I hadnt taken any notice as the buggy has always handles stuff pretty well, although the steering can be squirrely on rougher roads and does not self centre very well. I had  ditched the steering stabiliser bar as advised on here during the build. These white road markins were much more prominent thean normal painted ones. The buggy drove perfectly again after this. Was I experiencing the Bump steer I have read about or do I need a geometry check.any advice welcome. Thank you guys.

Beach Buggy Engine and Exhaust Help / Throttle cable query
« on: April 24, 2020, 11:21:16 PM »
Hi all , frustrating lockdown with this amazing april sunshine, doing lots of little jobs and touch ups whilst stuck at home. I have a query re the throttle cable. What secures the tube that guides the throttle cable through the fan housing, mine seems to want to rattle out toward the carb leaving the throttle cable bare and rubbing a groove in the casting of the bellhousing. I have the other sleeve from where the cable exits the side of the floorpan tunnel in situ, but is this one supposed to meet the short one coming through the fan housing , mine just seems to rattle around loosely on the throttle cable 🤔any suggestions  appreciated.

« on: April 15, 2020, 12:10:14 PM »
Morningall, ,just going through my bits cupboard and came accross a fuel king pressure regulator ,I bought this during the build and never used it. Do many of you guys use or can enlighten the pros and cons of using or not using one? My set up is a rear mounted spun tank above the motor, stock mechanical fuel pump , in line glass filter feeding a copy mexican carb on 1600 twinport. All running pretty well no flat spots ,enough power, little rich on start up due to auto choke set up never  been quite right . Best left alone   ? Thanks in advance 👍

Beach Buggy Engine and Exhaust Help / pos fuel perculation
« on: August 04, 2019, 04:53:10 PM »
hi all, been out for a nlSt snd all running well. in the spring I have been having hot start success by gently puttle throttle to floor and holding down . now the weather is generally warmer I am sometimes finding it not so easy to start again. I wondered if the fuel may be evaporating  from the float chamber. only thing is it starts and the smells flooded.  i havent altered the electronic choke since winter and i notice when I blip it to set choke the butterfly doesnt fall around  as many steps of the ratchet as before. or if the chamber is empty do l need to pump the throttle a couple of times to get some fuel in ? many thanks,

Beach Buggy Engine and Exhaust Help / Choke , summer / winter
« on: November 04, 2018, 11:23:07 AM »
Hi all. Flippin choke Again 😖, had it set sort of the best it had been where the butterfly was almost closed cold and pretty much upright when hot, and cold startingbwell and using the gentle pedal press to the floor and held down strting well hot. The temp has dropped a bit now and i am finding that even when pedal held down gently, the engine is winding over like it used to before starting hot , then runs lumpy for a minutr till it clears, then fine again, the other thing it did yesterday was cut out coming to a junction, dont know why things should have changed as only difference was the temperature. Dont think i can adjust choke much more or it would be jammed shut when cold. Could it be weak or rich? Negligible popping on over run , plugs clean , petronix not points,  possible a small exhaust manifold leak could give these symptons ? I have read that the chokes need tweaking summer to winter, the only other thing is that my centre punch dot on the choke is no where near the
Adjustment marks, yet the butterfly is as i say shut when cold and upright when hot !, baffles me , any ideas.   Thanks

Beach Buggy Rolling Chassis Help / Ball joint rubbers
« on: October 23, 2018, 05:14:32 PM »
Hi. All, i have an mot due in two weeks and notice that i have two ball joint rubbers split, joints were replaced two years ago and i had heard that the rubbers are rubbish and need replacing almost each mot. I seem to remember a post suggesting the best rubbers are from a prop shaft supplier  , anyone have their info. I have meyle rubbers here but not sure where i bought them, i suspect they came with the meyle joints and were left over after fitting the better ones , ( which have still split 😖 )
Also, a silly fitting questio, can i fit by justremoving the nut and seperating the tape,,,
And replacing the rubber, or is there a procedure re the front torsion arms, not sure if they will twang around when things are removed.. any reccomendations appreciated. 👍

Beach Buggy Engine and Exhaust Help / Warm up times
« on: July 28, 2018, 05:56:28 PM »
Hi all , anyone else expeienced an missing, bogging or hesitation if they drive away imediately after starting up .? I have noticed that when i get the buggy out, set the choke and let it warm up  it drives perfectly. If i leave it for say a period of two hours or more, should i treat it as a full cold start again ? Because on the occasions i havnt , and just started it and driven right off i have had stumbling and hesitation, once on a late evening but still 18 degrees, and the other on a full sunny day at 24 degrees. Literally a minute later after stopping and waiting for some hot air to get up the risers it is perfect again. Not worried about it as i know that it is just lack of hot air but just curious if others have this too , in which case does a standard beetle suffer the same or is it to do with the lack of tinware on a buggy. Thanks all

Beach Buggy Engine and Exhaust Help / Valve clearance query
« on: July 01, 2018, 10:25:50 AM »
Hi all, just curious as to peoples thoughts on valve clearances, i read that all are 6thou but used to be 4 tho, then some were 6 and 4 either inlet or exhaust.just wondering if my clack clack at cold start could be a gap that takes up when things get hot, someone described the same clack i have to a tee and tried everything with out success until he reduced valve clearance to 5 thou which helped a lot. Anyone else set there valves less than six. Any thoughts or advice welcome. Many thanks

Beach Buggy Engine and Exhaust Help / Evening air.
« on: June 30, 2018, 12:55:46 AM »
Took buggy to the beach last eve, had a meal etc so it was parked up for 3 to 4 hours, when i left i started engine and drove it instantly so as not to annoy the campers and caravanners on the site. Now i have had no issues with icing since i changed manifold and heat risers, every time i gave it a bit of throttle it would bog badly. Thought it was a blocked fuel filter but then realised i hadnt warmed it up and it was probably fuel not atomised due to cold carb. And this with an air temp of 15 degrees plus, just goes to show how important those risers are, after half a mile up the road it was warm and running fine again

Beach Buggy Engine and Exhaust Help / Clacking when cold
« on: June 24, 2018, 09:46:00 AM »
Hi all, when i start up from cold i have a clacking that goes when it is warm, someone subggested it could be shortage of oil up the top end. I have never replaced the pressure valve in the bottom of the case, does this keep oil up the top for cold starts ? Anyone changed them or know how they work. Do i need a tool to get them out. Not sure if i have one ore two. Any advice appreciated . 👍
