Biting the bullet and going to buy a new engine. After years of building the buggy I've never managed to get the engine to work. I've never seen it running, it leaks oil everywhere, compression is only ok and there's a bit of end float.

So taking the fact I have a big birthday coming up to splash some cash on a new engine. Thinking something like this - https://www.theengineshop.info/acatalog/Big-Bore-Thurrock-Engine-1776cc-Plus-211100034_1776__.html

Anyone have any experience with these ? good or bad ?

What sort of carburettor would go best with this ? don't want to spend a fortune so was thinking of 32/36 Weber, but I know very little about this so was hoping for some advice.

If I do go for a bigger carb than the standard Solex, would the standard fuel pump be up to the job or would I need to upgrade to an electrical pump ? Do different carbs require pressure regulators ?

Trying to get all my ducks lined up before ordering

Beach Buggy Electrical Help / Charging Light
« on: November 26, 2018, 02:21:32 PM »
The wiring on my buggy is all bespoke. I've got a query on the charging light when running a dynamo. I've tried following Pete's wiring diagram, but a bit confused over this. The charging light connects to 61 on the regulator, but is it powered from the regulator, or earthed through the regulator ?

Beach Buggy Electrical Help / Ignition / charging light
« on: July 11, 2015, 04:02:46 PM »
Trying to figure out the wiring for the ignition light, as I'm not using the standard ignition switch. Does it take a 12v feed and earth through 61 on the voltage regulator or is the 12v feed from the regulator ?

Beach Buggy General Help / Reverse light switch
« on: June 20, 2015, 04:11:30 PM »
I want to fit a reverse light switch on the buggy. There is a plugin on the nose cone of the gearbox where I think it goes, feels like an Allen key should fit it. Any one got any idea what size key will fit ? I'd prefer not to have to take the gearbox out if possible  :)

Beach Buggy Rolling Chassis Help / Front beam help
« on: February 16, 2015, 08:33:17 PM »
Does anybody have any tips on fitting the torsion leaves to a ball joint beam ? Found out end of last year that the original beam on my donor beetle was knackered, one of the adjusters had snapped, so managed to pick up a nearly new replacement. Only problem is it's a bare beam. So I've stripped the old beam down, and am trying to build up this new beam. Starting on the top tube, I thought I had the leaves in, only to find they were upside down. Now I'm having real problems trying to get them in. Anyone got any advice on how best to do this please ?

Beach Buggy General Help / windscreen
« on: June 26, 2014, 08:21:13 PM »
I've seen several pictures of buggys with radically cut down windscreens - more like wind reflectors. Can you buy these anywhere, or are they cut down standard windscreens ?

Beach Buggy Electrical Help / savage hazard warning switch
« on: May 15, 2014, 07:25:49 PM »
Is anyone using a savage hazard warning switch ? I'm having problems wiring mine up correctly. If I follow the instructions from cbs, then I can get it to work

The only problem is that the switch comes with a warning led so you know it's on, and following these instructions leaves out wiring the warning led

If I wire the led in parallel with the power from the relay, then it will be on all the time. If I wire it in series, then there isn't enough voltage getting through to the indicators.

Anyone got any ideas ?

Members Buggies / Pete's buggy build
« on: May 11, 2014, 09:16:05 PM »
So, some years ago now, the wife said I needed to find a hobby, thinking I would take up football or something like that. I had other plans. I had always fancied building a car, and with my first ever car being a beetle, thought that building a beach buggy would be a good easy start !!!

It started with this

Which was quickly stripped down to this

 :-\
I brought a retro surf body shell from Pete at fibrecraft

Which when fitted, looks a bit like this

How does the plastic guide bush fit on the gear selector rod ? Do I fit it to the rod, or does it fit in the guide slot in the tunnel ?

Beach Buggy Electrical Help / Savage starter switch
« on: April 10, 2014, 08:30:23 PM »
Anyone know how much current the solenoid on the starter moter draws ? I want to use a switch to start the car and need to know if I can use the switch directly or would be better using a relay
