Beach Buggy General Help / Starter bush replacenent
« on: March 14, 2020, 03:25:11 PM »
How do I fit a new starter motor bush?
I've drifted the old one out from the flywheel end. But how best to get the new one in without manglung it?
Also, can it be put in fton the flywheel end, or must it be put in from the starter end?

Beach Buggy Rolling Chassis Help / Axle gaiters
« on: February 29, 2020, 02:16:34 PM »
OK so it's generally accepted that 'split' axle gaiters should have the split at 3 or 9 o'clock, rather than 12 o'clock. However my new ones, and I imagine most, have thinner walls opposite the split which I pressume is to more room between the half shafts and the chassis forks. But that would leave the split at 12 o'clock.
Still fit with the split at 3 or 9 ?

Beach Buggy Engine and Exhaust Help / Doghouse tinware
« on: January 14, 2020, 03:37:34 PM »
I don't have the bolt on bits of the doghouse on the rear of my fanshroud.
I've never thought of it as being an issue on a buggy engine.
What do you all think?

With a standard fuel pump the more the engine revs the more the pump pumps. But does that mean the fuel pressure to the carb goes up too?

The reason for the question is this.
Paul Smith recently posted on the club FB pagr about how fuel consumption increases dramatically with a Weber 32/36 if the fuel pressure goes over 3psi.
I've done a couple of longish runs this year on my own, so not holding back the horses to keep a convoy intact. I've been revving about 500-700 rpm faster than convoy speeds and my fuel consumption has been eye watering. The fuel guage has been moving faster than the buggy.

I knocked the end of the rear slave cylinder last night, the rubber boot, whilst putting the shoes back on and it forced a bit of brake fluid out from between the boot and the cylinder body.
Have I bust the cylinder?

Parts Wanted / Standard crank pulley,

Looking for a standard crank pulley. And bolt maybe.
Anyone going to Stoneleigh got one they want to sell?

Beach Buggy Engine and Exhaust Help / Flywheel gland nut size.
« on: March 30, 2019, 01:56:23 PM »
Having a 'mare putting my engine back in. I'm wondering if the new flywheel gland nut is the issue.
There is a sort of padding ring in tbe nut aperture, before the needle bearing and I'm thinking this might be stopping the g/box shaft from entering the crank. Anyone had a similar issue?
Should I prise the padding out?

Beach Buggy Engine and Exhaust Help / Lightened flywheels
« on: February 17, 2019, 05:26:25 PM »
Lightened flywheels tend to come preped for 8 dowel. Am I correct in thinking you don't need your crank to be 8 dowel?

Beach Buggy Engine and Exhaust Help / Clutch replacement.

LUK clutch kits, 3 piece, are they OK or am I better looking for another brand? If so which?

Beach Buggy Engine and Exhaust Help / Type 3 engine strip down
« on: January 11, 2019, 07:43:02 PM »
Been trying to strip down a type 3 motor but stumbled at more or less the first hurdle.  How do you get the cast fan gubbins off?  I've removed the crank nut and initial fan.

Beach Buggy Engine and Exhaust Help / Dodgy starter solenoid.
« on: November 03, 2018, 04:37:36 PM »
The starter solenoid is just starting to play up. Does not kick in every time, usually the first turn of the key after a few days lay up, but then OK.
The beginning of the end do you think?

The cranl pulley retaining bolt washer is not flat, or at least it's not on mine. Which way round should it go? Bolt into the dished/concaved side, or should it sit on the domed/convexed side? (Always had it sit in the concaved side but want to check if that's corrrct.)

Never done a compression test so whats the form?

Engine hot?

Disconnect live feed to coil, or HT from coil to dizzy.

Remove one spart plug at a time and replace with compression tester. (I suppose it'll turm over easier with all 4 out, do anything against doing that?)

Turn engine over for how long? 5 seconds?

Hope everything reads 110-120?

Beach Buggy Engine and Exhaust Help / Crank pulley / oil loss
« on: May 23, 2018, 01:58:31 PM »
Ir an after marked crank pulley is not throwing the oil back into the engine efficiently, the oil will leak out. But to what extent?  Will it just trickle down the block onto the lower tinware and drip off, or would it get thrown onto the rear of the crank pulley?
i.e. if there is no sign of oil on the rear of tbe pulley woyld you pressume there is no issue withe the pulley's throw back efficiency?

Beach Buggy Engine and Exhaust Help / Wobbly fan.
« on: May 04, 2018, 06:56:18 PM »
Got quite a nasty noise frome the engine. I think it's the fan catching the housing.  I've had a grovel at the back of the fan housing and there is noticably movement in the fan. I've had a socket on the large bolt at the rear, but don't seem to be able to tighten it up any.
So (a) how tight should that nut be; if mega tight then I'll try again with a bit more muscle. (b) what else could be tha cause of the play in the fan? (I fitted a new alternator last year)
