Beach Buggy Rolling Chassis Help / Rear bearings IRS
« on: September 14, 2020, 05:57:33 PM »
Apart from the hub nut, how easy are these to change? Any issues with one year only sizes? What else should I change while in there?

I have been hearing a clunking from left rear on lh bends, got it up on axle stands and there's noticeable play, so assume it's bearings. Will whip the drum off and get more grease in there as I need the car this week.

Any hints and tips appreciated

Beach Buggy Body and Chassis Help / Moulding with fibreglass
« on: April 04, 2020, 06:38:34 PM »
In the olden days when life wasn't yet in colour the only source of glass fibre was Halfords Isopon kits with the red hardener. There was a little bit of colour  So that's all I have experience of.

Now I want to do 2 things.

First on the buggy I want to alter the dashboard and make a moulding for the instruments. My temporary, about 12 years old, MDF solution needs to finally be made permanent

Second I have something fairly small and fragile (made of polyfiller) I need to take a mould from then cast a duplicate.

To make the dash piece which I need to do on the existing dash then make a mould while on the dash would plasticine do the trick as it's easy to work?

What slhould I get to do the jobs? I won't need a lot so no good buying by the gallon, don't need it coloured.

What should I use as release agent?

Any other tips welcome

I know what you did last Summer . . . / Blackpool
« on: October 06, 2019, 10:51:00 AM »
Had a run out to Blackpool yesterday. Bit moist but good company and chocolate cake made up for it. (sorry Alan, last few bits are mine)

Paul, Dave M, Steve and Scott made it 5 buggies braving the elements.

Put in here as could be last summer run of 2019

Beach Buggy Rolling Chassis Help / Hills - tyre choice conundrum
« on: August 07, 2019, 09:21:55 AM »
I have 265/70 tyres on 15x8.5 rims

Fine in East Anglia but it's not as flat here and I can rarely get into 4th gear.

2 questions

How wide can I go on 8.5 rims.
An online search came up with
8,5 Inches
Min 225 mm
Ideal 235 or 245 mm
Max 255 mm
I am running 265 and they're fine

I need a lower profile (or different final drive) as it is overgeared as is and definitely struggling
I can find 275/60 15 and 265/50 15 but not much else

Moving back to Suffolk or the Netherlands is not an option

Any suggestions?

VW Parts For Sale / AD code 1600 Beetle engine -
« on: September 01, 2018, 02:33:16 PM »
This is the engine that was in the buggy when I bought it.  Used it for 2 years then a new engine came up that was too good to say no to and this one went onto the bench.  I always intended to keep it so that if I ever sold the buggy it could go back in and the 1776 could be sold separately as it is worth a bit.

As we are moving house soon I have decided to let it go.

It is an AD code 1600 twin port complete with clutch, fuel pump and filter adapter.
It ran well and always started first time
I cant feel any end float and have just turned it over and there is decent compression on all cylinders.
Only potential issue I know of is that it would sometimes smoke at start up when hot but only for the first few seconds.

No carb, no tinware or oil cooler as they went onto the new engine, no distributor (I have that in the shed somewhere if youu want to make an offer for it)

450 or it goes on eBay in a week or so
Would prefer collection from Ipswich but if I can get a pallet and a courier could shift it that way, no idea of cost.

Beach Buggy Electrical Help / Tachometer
« on: July 26, 2018, 11:18:42 AM »
Is there any reason why I shouldn't run 2 rev counters?

I am thinking of moving the littlun I have now to the engine compartment and fitting another on the dash

Only thing I can see is potential voltage drop but they don't take much if anything from the ignition circuit

Beach Buggy Engine and Exhaust Help / Cylinder heads
« on: June 19, 2018, 01:12:54 PM »
Having a bad day

Taking plugs out for a clean and to ease turn over for tappet setting and number 4 really tight and brought the thread out with it. So new head needed.

Went to the other side and number 2 the same. 1&3 fine.

Always torqued to the manual so not overtightened so what on earth has clobbered those two cylinders?

Won't know if there is any other damage until I get the heads off.

Any ideas (and spare heads)

Beach Buggy IVA / SVA Help / Hypothetical engine number query
« on: May 22, 2018, 09:08:33 AM »
Recent posts got me thinking

It is possible to import genuine VW bits from South America, cases come without an engine number.

So here are the questions.

Someone has end float on an unmodified VHI and swaps the case for a VW case without a number imported from Brazil, how do they inform the bureaucrats without a world of pain? They cant stamp the old number on, that's ringing in theory.

Next scenario, same as above but the bores are worn so new barrels and pistons increases the capacity, even worse in the eyes of the man.  What do they do?

Final scenario, a whole new engine comes in, either assembled or as parts, more cc and gets home fitted.

And how about if it's a buggy not an unaltered Beetle?

Any ideas?

At Swanage Flags gave me an idiots guide to adjusting play in a steering box.

When I got home I searched high and low for my original VW steering box and couldnt find it.  Now getting ready to move house the steering box has emerged but the  idiot has forgotten pretty much everything Flags said  :-[ (mixture of age and beer I reckon)

So, for all the others on here who are too embarrassed to ask, could you do a brief write up for me as I would love to adjust the original and swap the "new" one out as it has fewer turns lock to lock so is harder to use and has just as much play as the one it replaced.

Cheers mate
