Beach Buggy Electrical Help / Hall effect senders.
« on: January 08, 2017, 06:21:52 PM »
Hi everyone.

I have been doing a few bits on the new buggy this week and seem to chasing my tail over getting the new speedo working. I bought a set of dials from CBS last year below but never did anything with them wiring wise. I need a Hall effect sender for the speedo to work. I bought one this week from them but it has an M12 thread which is way to small for the standard Vw cable to screw onto,

I think my options are buy a new sender from Vw heritage which is quite expensive at £122 or modify the cable I have to fit the sender from CBS cut down and fit smaller end attachment, adapter type thing.

Has anyone had this problem before? and if so do you have any solutions for this.

Any help or links to spares most welcome.

Cheers

Members Buggies / Buggy storage issue now resolved.

Hi all.
The following pics may be classed as garage porn to some. It was the only thing I could think of to store the wife’s buggy, mine and the campervan without moving house or renting a lockup/ garage elsewhere. The weight of the lift is unbelievable and the quality is great, took a lot of huffing and puffing to get it from Telford to where it is now. It can lift 2000 kgs so has no problem with the buggy. Runs off a 3 pin plug as well. All I need now is a roller garage door. ;-)up ;-)up ;-)up ;-)up

Hi all.

A bit of a strange one for a friend this one. He has built / rebuilt his beetle engine with new 1641 barrels and piston from heritage and he thinks he put a C25 scat cam in it. When it comes to checking the valve clearance one side needed 3mm of shims under the rockers and the other needed 4mm of shims to get the clearance. He says he didn’t need to put any barrel spacers in so that rules out for not fitting the 2 on the side with the more shims. He’s not sure what rockers he is using 1.10.1 rockers which are new as well. Is this ok or does it need more invest as I would have thought that things should have been the same on both sides of the engine.
Still scratching me head and getting splinters.  :) :) :)

Beach Buggy Electrical Help / A few electrical questions.
« on: May 30, 2016, 07:22:30 PM »
Hi gang.

I am about to finish the wiring on the latest buggy Scarlet and have a couple of questions.

Q1 When fitting a rev counter, the feed comes from the coil but from which terminal + or -?

Q2 The buggy is being fitted with mazda RX8 seats which are both heated. I am looking at fitting savage momentary non latching wired with a timer relay. Is this the correct way to wire or does the relay need a constant feed from the push switch (latching) or do the relays work from a single input from the switch? I get the fact that the relay is powered when ignition is live and the switch activates the relay to power the seats bit.

Also if anyone is trying to figure out what wires do what on the seats the light green and white are for the airbag which went off this afternoon  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Have not seen many birds around for a while  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Ears are still ringing ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Hi all.

It's been quite a quick build on this buggy as I have been in a bit of a rage with the wife. I built a yellow buggy for her a couple of years ago that she never drove and we sold it last year as we don’t have room in the garage for 3 cars. It must have been 2 or 3 weeks after the sale and she came out with the quote “wouldn’t it be nice if we had a red buggy" WTF!!!!!!!!!

Any way after a few beers and lots of evil bay searching things started to arrive by Mr Postie.

I started this build over the xmas hols and have been on it most weekends so far. Hope you lot like.

Hi all.

I am after as the title says for the latest buggy build I'm about to start. I have been in touch with Mike about a system but I will need an exhaust before he gets chance to build one for me. So looking for something to get it going. Not looking for bling but also not on its last legs.
As for the petrol cap and neck I am putting the fuel fill point in the centre of the bonnet so I am after a cap locking would be great and the neck part to weld to the tank. Also after a steering wheel.
If you guys have any of this lurking in the shadows please pm or post some pics.

Many thanks

Parts Wanted / Gudgeon pin clips
« on: February 07, 2016, 08:11:21 PM »
HI all.

I'm in the process of putting a few things together for another build as the boss wants a red buggy now even tho we sold the yellow ones I built for her last year.

I've been building a 1641cc motor and I have managed to loose 2 gudgeon pin retainers. So I am asking if any one has a couple of new ones for 22mm pins they are not needing.

Hi

I have been looking for some new wheels for my buggy but cant seem to find any alloy ones to fit the wide 5 except in the states. I have found a company here called imagewheels, but the price is rather high and I am not sure they would work anyway.So.........

Where did you get your wheels from? Or who can make some?

Beach Buggy Rolling Chassis Help / Ball joint removal.
« on: December 07, 2015, 06:54:55 PM »
Hi all.

I seem to have come to a mental block with regards to which way the front beam upper ball joints are removed from the arms. I've removed the lowers with a hammer. I will be using a press for the uppers but keep talking myself into the other way then the other way. There is a lot of corrosion around them so not so easy to see which way to push them.

Any way with the left hand upper arm on the bench and the grub screw for the leaf springs pointing up the ball joint shank and thread point down which way to push to remove?

Beach Buggy General Help / Tyre sizes for possible new wheels.
« on: December 05, 2015, 11:13:36 AM »
Hi gang.

I am looking at getting some new wheels for my buggy and have found some I like the look of from Mooreparts in the US.

My question is what size tyres do I need for these rims?

Fronts I am thinking 15" Diameter X 6.5" Wide
Backs 15" Diameter X 10" Wide

Links to them.

Any suggestions appreciated be it wrong size of wheel offset, back spacing, tyre size etc.

Hi all

Recently I am getting the battery charging light flickering and staying on when the buggy is ticking over. The revs dont need to be raised as I have just balanced the carbs again and set the idle speed. After a while the light goes out. My bug bear is that I bought the regulator and dyno brand new this year so not to pleased.

I am trying to find out what the voltages are supposed to be on the regulator. Here is what I have ( the light was just going out at this point 5 mins of engine running)

DF 6.3 V
D+ 15 V
B+ 14.2 V same as on the battery terminal
61  11.6 V When I check the voltage on this terminal the battery light comes on faint.

Dyno terminals are the same as the regulator voltage.

Hope this makes some sort of sense.

Beach Buggy Engine and Exhaust Help / Oil Pressure Piston Relief Choice
« on: August 03, 2015, 07:23:49 PM »
Hi

My ongoing oil system. Well when I built the engine in the buggy it was from scratch so all new parts. At the time I bought the relief pistons and springs as a set, I think EMPI.

Now I am more than likely going to stock pistons and springs. So why are the stock ones the same front and back on the dual relief but the EMPI ones are different. One being taller and has a wasted portion. I have read that a wasted portion piston was only fitted to 1500sp engines.

Are the genuine vw ones better or the EMPI ones? These are going in my 2054 cc engine.

Beach Buggy Engine and Exhaust Help / Oil pressure relief Pistons
« on: August 02, 2015, 05:39:22 PM »
Hi all.

It's been some time since I had to remove and replace any of the oil pressure relief pistons but after getting loads of water in the engine driving to Swanage my oil system is getting a full clean out.

So deep sump off to find the oil pick up in the case rattling around, hopefully my oil pressure issue found here. Then I removed the oil pressure relief spring and Pistons. I had the aftermarket ones fitted with the waisted portion on one. Going standard now but can't remember for the life of me which way the Pistons go in.

Is it flat face to the spring or is it flat face in the hole first with the spring pushing it up on the case?

Hope that makes sense, imagine an n or a u representing the piston with the spring under them.

Cheers

I know what you did last Summer . . . / Swanage 2015 cruise
« on: July 26, 2015, 06:57:32 PM »
First of all many thanks to Flags for sorting it all out, the camping and the cruise. The weather memo for Friday must have got lost but Saturday was great. Some great roads and brill stops on the way.

Thanks also to Flags for the instant gasket saving the day after my impromptu engine oil change after getting quite a lot of water into it after not fitting a rocker cover correctly before setting off in the monsoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooon of the British summer on Friday. ::) ::) ::) ::)

Cheers to the guys that helped me get our tent up in rapid order. ;-)up ;-)up

And was great to meet quite a few new people.  ;-)up ;-)up

We had a blast but were wimps for not staying for Sunday, I couldn't go through the weather that was coming in. Hopefully the lot that stayed got away with as Flags always say's it never rains on carnival day.

Some pics of the cruise.

Cheers Testa and gang. ;-)up ;-)up ;-)up ;-)up

Toyz For Sale / 10 man tent for sale.
« on: May 16, 2015, 09:49:07 AM »
Hi all.

I have for sale our quite large 10 person tent. The tent has three sleeping pods and a large living space in the centre. This has been used just 3 times. I have put this in a different bag that has wheels as the one it came in was way to flimsy.

This was quite expensive new which was 2 years ago.

Looking for £120.

Can probably take to Dubs in the park tomorrow, NEWS or Swanage.
