Project Shhhhh... part one

Cut off the cannons



Make up a plate, weld to the pipe 







Pleased with that.

Unfortunately one of the cans was missing its metal seal so I either have to get a new set or get some heat resist gasket material.

Probably going to re-use the MX5 hangers to hang it off the frame - I welded it so the bracket lines up. The original cannon had a support strut on the tube but it was half the weight.

Once both are done its into the electrolysis bath before some HT paint.

That is an improvement, unless the gearbox is solid mounted using hangers offthe bumper will need to allow for a fair bit of movement, back to the exhaust or engine will be less prone to cracking with use.

I have been debating that, the engine is mounted on the horns with rubber mounts so I don't know how much movement there would be, also the can's hangar point is quite close to the exhaust mount point. I did look at re-using the existing strut off the tube (in the 1st pic above) that supported the cannons but put off by the extra weight of the can.

Having got it running well before I got into the rest of the car, now 3 months later it's not right. Fuelling I think - but since I will have to mess with it with the new exhausts I've put that off for a few days.  So when it's running I'll see how much vibration there is.

Thanks but the exhaust would stick a foot out the back!

The engine is mounted to the same bit of frame as the can will hang off so as long as the can hanger has more movement than the engine mounts all should be good. If not then I'll sort something else out.

You may need a shorter bracket and longer rubber as the engine deflection there could be an inch or even more as you get nose cone up and engine tilts down on acceleration and also rotates with the torque. Will be trial and error to find a long lasting solution.

Needed a fuel tank access flap to replace the lovely plastic one



However it had to be curved as the front cover has quite a bit of curve to it... Audi TT fuel flap just perfect, curved and cheap! 



It needed a bit of work as it is designed to fit flush rather than surface mount. It has a remote electric release that I will use or convert to manual. Something appealing about a remote electric fuel flap release on a car that does not even have doors!

Soo having finished off the hydraulic clutch, put a remote release on the fuel cap, built a set of steering stops (there was nothing, no form of lock stop at all - unless you count the tyres hitting the bodywork!), and done what seems like a mountain of other jobs big and small I was finally able to drive it today.. to the MOT station where it was pronounced fit to drive on the roads.

Now to make it sound and feel less like a Jalopy about to fall apart...

Hopping they just need bedding in as all new shoes and everything else.
