Hi all

Hope everyone is getting on with those winter jobs on those buggies.

My Doon is nearing completion.  There is one thing that I am struggling to sort out and that is the bonnet latch.  The Doon has an opening bonnet so I need to sort out a latch/catch and release mechanism.  I'd like to use a cable release like a beetle but not sure which catch to use.  Lee at Volksmagic suggested using a Corrado catch but they are hard to get hold of, so was thinking about using a golf mechanism top and bottom available from Heritage and fleebay.

Opinions welcome, especially from Doon owners.

Cheers in advance.

Dave

Cant help with this as mine is strapped down with those horrible rubber catches.
I think Chris (Doon L004) on here used beetle bits from the donor and I think that is what it is designed for. One tip (again courtesy of Chris) is to fit an internal restraint to stop the bonnet coming up if the catch lets go, a strong nylon cord with quick release clip for instance.

Whereabouts in the country are you as t here is probably a DOON near you

I thought about those rubber straps but I have a cut off switch under the bonnet so don't want to keep having to undo those every time I park up.

I'm in Surrey, so if there are any Doon owners nearby let me know.

Hi Dave,

Give me a call or e-mail (i'll send my info over on private message) as I will be making a bonnet latch holder / frame for another Doon in 2 or 3 weeks time.

I have made a number off the years so know teh best sort of way of doing it.

It is designed to use the standard beetle locking mechanism and pin, which can be operated by an afetrmarket kit car cable, and tehn use a simple chain and hook to work as a secondary mechanism should the bonnet spring open.

I can send some pictures across tonight when I get home to explain my ramblings better.  ;-)up

Chad

Dave

Some photo's of my solution using the original beetle latch and stay.

The bonnet support stay came from a Ford Granada in my local scrap yard.

The safety cable clips into the bonnet support stay bracket and allows the bonnet to open about 150mm

Hope this gives you some idea's

Chris

I remember a certain Mr Doon person not having a decent catch on his bonnet once - it was messy!  ;D

A bit more info on this, I bought a latch from Volksmagic while I was there and Lee fits a Corrado safety latch.
Just bought one  on ebay not cheap and coming from Greece, but quality bit of kit.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=281126171451&ssPageName=ADME:L:OC:GB:3160

Then you have to make up a bent bit of metal for it to catch on, this goes on the bottom lip, and a plate that is held on by the catch pin to hold the latch - simples.
Might still fit a second longer than usual restraint just in case

When I get round to fitting it (couple of months) I will take some pics

Hi Dave,

I could, but not for a few weeks.

However, Lee at Volksmagic has just made (and patterned up) a real nice alternative bonnet catch holder for the Green Doon he is doing.

As he has drawn it all out and has the pattern I am sure he can make you one. He is on holiday at the moment so I will ask him when he is back.
