it’s almost 12 months since i started stripping my beetle and cannot remember how the steering column was actually assembled at the bottom end - is there anything that sits on the shaft and presses into the outer column to hold it central or not - there isn’t anything present in mine - thanks

nothing in there it floats just the outer column secured to the tub.

You may have had a sturdy metal "C" shaped cup at the point just after the steering shaft exited the column tube. This has two small tags that when new had "clear plastic" push on covers and the tabs bent over to secure the C piece in place.   (These plastic covers will now be murky yellow with age). My column, from a 1975 donor Beetle, still had this C piece in place and the spare column I keep also had the piece fitted (If you didn`t have this in place prior to dismantling, and many now don`t,  it won`t be a problem). If it will help to have a photo let me know and I can take one.
