Gear box clutch shaft movement
on:
October 12, 2020, 05:52:01 PM
Evening all , a few weeks ago I stripped the engine off and rear axle / gear box . The engine came off easily , no excessive force needed .
The shaft that comes from the gear box to the clutch has movement in it . Probably about 5mm sideways / up down etc . No in and out .
Is this meant to be or is it a new bearing job ?
I don’t intend to do a full strip and was hoping not to have to open it , but if needs must .
Cheers Sam

Also , as a side note , can anyone recommend anyone who does a full rebuild , as I have another AB swing axle box stripped ready for a rebuild , but it’s waaaay out of my league .
I am down south west but happy to ship it for a quality job .
Cheers Sam

It'll be fine, the nose of the input shaft is supported by the pilot bearing in the flywheel bolt. A little play is normal.

Thanks for that ManxDavid , this whole level of mechanics is new so was always let to believe that shafts should be rigid / no play or movement .
I will continue as planned then.

As David says the first motion shaft sits in spigot bearing in flywheel nut so when it's all bolted up there will be no play

I bought a brand new "Rancho" box from Heritage for a fraction of the price that "Bears" quoted me to repair my old one - Shop around
But as others have said, that shaft is supported at the front by an inner bush, so wouldn't panic just yet

If it was quiet, changed nicely and didn't jump out of gear then it's fine.
