Right then...

I have a few large chrome coated metal parts that I would like to get powder coated, but I need to de-chrome the coating so that powder-coating is then possible. What I'm asking is how the hell do you de-chrome them?

I'm sure someone can point me in the right direction.

local platers may strip it for you as thinking you need reverse the process of putting it on otherwise it is polishing/ grinding off then rubbing smooth. The acid bath used in plating are not nice for home use.

Couldn't you just key the surface well then get it powder coated?

I thought it had to be stripped off using the reverse of the "electrical" means that it was put on with - this will almost certainly need to be done at a chrome plating workshop and is actually a really simple process to do.

My powder coat company will not touch anything with any chrome on it at all, despite being keyed as the tiniest particle can blister very easily when heated in the oven.

I hope you are all well Mr Hunter ;-)up   Reverse plating works fast ,, but it will wet blast off as well works for powder coating as well as it puts no! heat into the coating why stripping it,

Hi Guys'

Thanks for the info ;-)up I have been in touch with some of the local places but none are able to do it, they all recommend a company who do plating so I've contacted them and just waiting for a reply.

Have you tried asking South West Metal Finishing near Exeter?

platers must all have a stripping facility because folks send in stuff to be re-chromed.

Platers will do the stripping.... build up of scratches, little dings and minor corrosion sorted with the copper plating pre re-chroming.  Be prepared for a long wait tho` 3 months not unusual.

Right then,

Tried your suggestion "South west metal finishing" they made the point that they only do trade work no retail options.

But................

The local guys all pointed me to "https://dougtaylor.co.uk/ " So I sent them an e-mail and they responded really well, as it stands at the moment for them to remove the chrome coating will be estimated 50 + vat and the turn around will be approx 2 weeks but may be quicker depending on their work load. so looking forward to sort things out at the start of March.
Check out their web site, I was impressed. ;-)up

. . . . . .  they made the point that they only do trade work no retail options.

Rookie error there mate . . .  ::)

ALWAYS . . . ALWAYS . . . make enquiries such as this making out you are trade . .   "Hunters Auto's" or something similar

Conversation should go, "I've got a customer who wants . . . ."     Rather than "I want . . . ."

Stupid really, but can make a difference as it suggest that you are not one of the idiot's and timewasters out there just ringing around but someone who may just be back with more work later

Try it, you will be surprised what it can achieve   ;-)up

I have "bookmarked" this website. In decades of using platers I have never come across a 2 week turnaround.
