Was told by DVLA, think 2016...that "Beach Buggy" is not in the software "drop-down" list

Correct - It was not until late 2016 / early 2017 that we managed to get them to add it to teh standard drop downs. They have been using it as a "special" term for those taht have been inspected for a few more years though, its just taht the main system hadn`t included it.

However, and I cannot stress this enough . . .

DO NOT APPLY TO DVLA TO GET THE NAME BEACH BUGGY PUT ON YOUR V5 - unless you are prepared to have the vehicle inspected  ;-)up

I got the V5c in the post today.
The good news is that it does not say Beetle - the model is blank.
The bad news is that it says it’s a saloon.
What do I do next?

Apart from declaring it as SORN.
I guess this means an Iva is inevitable?

If anyone asks just say it's got a removable hard top that you've left at home.
Photos printed on genuine ILFORD® paper.

"Ah, Beach Buggies, sure, just a quick cheap way of getting a few more years out of a rusty Beetle. You can throw one together in a weekend." anon.

^^^ What he said

If it does not say Beetle, then it does infer that at some stage it has been altered on the V5. You need to do some digging with DVLA to establish when this was. You can apply to DVLA for the history of your V5 to find out what changes have been made and if they get difficult over that one over personal data, then you can apply under the freedom of information act for the details stating very clearly that you are not interested in details of previous owners, just any alterations made to the vehicle over its lifetime. This may throw up a date when it was changed from Beetle to blank.

In the meantime, build it and enjoy it - and if you do your work to IVA standards, because lets face it, its good practice to do so nowadays, then should you ever be called in for a test, you will have no problems.

A blank model is fine it is anything you want it to be to cover the saloon part just fit the rear of a hard top like a targa then from the rear it is a saloon. Get on and use it and be legal so it does not ping the anpr system

I wondered if it was blank because I left the model part blank on the v62.
Then again they would have the model on there database

What you put on the V62 has no bearing on what's on the V5C that comes back. The computer just spits out whatever info is in it. Just build your car and enjoy it, it's been registered correctly according to systems that were in place at some point in time. Just don't worry the DVLA too much or they may still make life awkward for you.

DON'T POKE THE BEAR unnecessarily!
